Abstract
Leaf spring is a component of a vehicle system that functions to reduce shock when the vehicle is running and when there are dynamic and static loading. In this study, what was done was to analyze the failure of the leaf spring by doing several tests with the aim of getting the impact of the failure on the leaf spring. This research includes several tests, namely the impact test, hardness test, chemical composition test, microstructure test and visual observation of the fracture structure of the material. In the research that has been carried out, it was found that the impact of the failure of the leaf spring is broken. The results of the impack test tend to increase with the lowest value at 0.14 j/mm2 and the highest at 0.28 j/mm2, the higher the impack value, the higher the ductility of the material. The results of the hardness test showed an increase in the hardness value near the fault location of 57.82 HV compared to the hardness value far from the test point of 56.27 HV from here it can be concluded that the higher the hardness value, the higher the brittleness of the material. In testing the chemical composition, it was found a decrease in the constituent elements of the material, namely element C 0.524 with a standard of 0.560-0.640, the decrease in element C was caused by the interaction between metal and water ions that were in between the leaf spring construction and then which caused a decrease in the ductile properties of the material. Then in the microstructure test there are three phases of ferrite, pearlite and cementite which are dominated by cementite elements. Cementite is a phase element that has a hardness value of 5-68 HRC on macro observations in terms of the fracture structure, it can be classified as fatigue fracture with the initial crack, crack propagation occurs and then the final crack occurs.
