Abstract

Key words: Speaking Skill and Information Gap Method. English speaking skill is very important in all aspect of people life. This reality makes teachers to think that speaking skill should be mastered by their students. In SDN 2Josari, the teacher said that there were some difficulties in teaching English especially in teaching speaking. Most of students will not talk or say anything and then when the teacher asks them to practice together they just make noise. Meanwhile, when the teacher asks them to practice one by one they are afraid, shy, and other friends will laugh. Here, the teacher will get many difficulties to teach speaking English, because speaking skill needs a lot of vocabularies to improve their speaking ability. It is the weakness of the teaching speaking in SDN 2 Josari. Here the researcher chooses Information Gap method as a method in teaching speaking. Information Gap method, is used in classroom elaborately with classroom action research. After the researcher designed a lesson plan, he acted as English teacher and collaborator observed during the teaching and learning process. The research was conducted in two cycles. Cycle one consisted of one meeting, and cycle two consisted of one meeting. The subjects were 12 students of sixth grade of SDN 2 Josari in academic year of 2014/2015. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaires, observation checklist, and test. The result of research showed that Information Gap Method successfully to overcome and improve students’ speaking skill. The minimum mastery criteria (KKM) were 60. In cycle one, 3 students passed the KKM, because the KKM could not be reached, the researcher continued to the next cycle. Then in last cycle showed improvement, all of students had improved the score and reached the minimum mastery criteria (KKM). Finally, the researcher stopped the research. Also, the students performance towards speaking activity seemed improve in every cycle. They felt enjoyable and interested in applying Information Gap method in their speaking class. Based on the result of this study, it is suggested that English teachers should implement Information Gap Method in speaking class. The English teachers are also recommended to use Information Gap Method in other level education and enclose this method using media.
