Abstract
ALTERNATIVE FUELS AS AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ENERGY SOURCE THAT CAN BE USED ARE BRIQUETTES. BRIQUETTES ARE SOLID FUELS THAT CAN BE USED AS AN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCE THAT HAS A CERTAIN FORM AND IS AN ENERGY SOURCE DERIVED FROM BIOMASS. EXAMPLES OF BIOMASS ARE LEAVES, GRASS, TWIGS, AS WELL AS AGRICULTURAL AND LIVESTOCK WASTE. IN THIS STUDY, A MIXTURE OF CORN COBS, BAGASSE AND PINEAPPLE LEAVES WAS USED. THIS STUDY AIMS TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF A MIXTURE OF CORN COBS, BAGASSE AND PINEAPPLE LEAVES ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF BRIQUETTES IN TERMS OF MOISTURE CONTENT, ASH CONTENT, VOLATILE MATTER CONTENT, BOUND CARBON CONTENT AND HEATING VALUE. FROM THE CONTENT OF WATER CONTENT, ASH CONTENT, VOLATILE MATTER CONTENT, BONDED CARBON CONTENT, CALORIFIC VALUE. EACH VARIATION OF BRIQUETTES DOES NOT MEET SNI STANDARDS. THE LOWEST WATER CONTENT TEST RESULTS ARE IN VARIATION 1 WITH A VALUE OF 26.349% WHILE THE MAXIMUM SNI STANDARD IS 8%. TESTING THE LOWEST VOLATILE MATTER CONTENT IN VARIATION 2 WITH A VALUE OF 39.125% IS STILL FAR FROM THE 15% SNI STANDARD. THE LOWEST ASH CONTENT TEST WAS IN VARIATION 2 WITH A RESULT OF 11.202% WHILE THE SNI STANDARD WAS 8%. THE HIGHEST BONDED CARBON TEST WAS IN VARIATION 2 WITH A VALUE OF 49.673% WHILE THE SNI STANDARD WAS 77%. THE HIGHEST CALORIFIC VALUE TEST RESULTS WERE IN THE 2ND VARIATION WITH A VALUE OF 5856 CAL/G WHILE THE SNI STANDARD WAS 5000 CAL/G. SO IT CAN BE INTERPRETED THAT BRIQUETTES MADE FROM A MIXTURE OF CORN COBS, BAGASSE, AND PINEAPPLE LEAVES HAVE THE HIGHEST CALORIFIC VALUE IN VARIATION 2 WITH A COMPOSITION OF 50 GRAMS OF CORN COBS 20 GRAMS OF BAGASSE 20 GRAMS OF PINEAPPLE LEAVES AND 10 GRAMS OF ADHESIVE THAT MEETS THE SNI STANDARD, NAMELY 5856 CAL/G.
