Abstract
English strengthens its importance with requests for worker qualifications that require sufficient English language competence. The English competence consisted four competencies, namely writing, reading, listening and speaking. Schools as human resource printers have tried to achieve this competence by presenting English as medium of instruction (EMI) or use of the English language to instruct academic subjects. This research was conducted at SMAN 3 Ponorogo which has implemented EMI in the form of SICP class. Respondents involved 10th grade SICP students. The method used is descriptive quantitative which analyzed using descriptive statistics. This study aims for uncovering students' perceptions with the presence of EMI towards students' English competence and their level of English competence after attending the SICP class as measured by the CEFR self-assessment grid. The results showed that (1) students' perceptions of English in the presence of EMI were considered positive with more than 60% of the sample answering yes. It means students English competence improved. The indicator for the level of English competence is measured by the CEFR self-assessment range for with the majority answer around 40,6% or 41%. (2) The result from CEFR shown that students of SICP class have B1 level or reached the expected level.
