Abstract

Low carbon steel type S355 J2+N is widely used as the main material in the manufacturing industry, building construction, and the train manufacturing industry. In the railroad manufacturing industry, S355 J2+N steel is used as the main component that makes up the bogieframe. This study analyzes changes in microstructure, hardness, and bending strength of S355 J2+N stell material treated with reforming treatment with temperature variations of 800°C and 850°C with a holding time of 20 minutes. Based on the tes result, the microstucture of S355 J2+N steel after reforming shows a pattern of pearlite and ferrite phase. And the higher the temperature used, there is a periodic shrinkage in the pearlite phase the ferrite phase becomes dominant. The highest hardness value is owned by steel before reforming wuth test result of 22,049 VHN. The hardness value of steel after 800°C reforming is 21,4523 HVN and at 850°C reforming the hardness value drops to 20,0536 HVN. Then in bending test, the highest bending strength value was obtainedfor steel before reforming, which reached 83,05 N/mm². the bending strength at 800°C reforming is 78,91 N/mm². and the lowest bending strength is at 850°C reforming which is 76,32 N/mm². from the result of the two tempeature reforming, it can be concluded that 800°C reformin is a temperature whose microstructure and mechanical propertiescan approach steel in conditions before reforming or raw material steel.
