Abstract

Changes in the elderly due to the aging process can affect the quality of sleep in the elderly and elderly people with poor sleep quality can influence the level of depression in the elderly. The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between sleep quality and depression levels in the elderly at the Tresna Werdha Social Services UPT (PSTW) Magetan. This research uses a quantitative research design with a correlation study. The research design that will be carried out uses a cross sectional approach. The total sample was 52 respondents using purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a sleep quality questionnaire (PSQI) and a depression level questionnaire (GDS-15). Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a P value <0.05. Based on this research, it was found that 28 respondents (53.8%) had poor sleep quality, 23 respondents (44.2%) had elderly people with mild depression, and 11 respondents (21.2%) had moderate depression. Analysis of the relationship between the sleep quality variable and the depression level variable obtained a value of p (0.029) < α (0.05), so H0 was rejected, which means there is a relationship between sleep quality and the level of depression in the elderly at the Tresna Werdha Social Services UPT (PSTW) Magetan. It is estimated that elderly people can maintain good quality sleep so that it does not impact depression levels so they can enjoy a better quality of life.
