Abstract

Key Words: Reading, Chunking Strategy The researcher got some problems from pre observation in the teaching reading skill at MTS GenilangitPoncol, Magetan such as the students were afraid to express their idea by using English. The students usually are bored while they are reading. The students are difficult to understand the meaning of the text. Next,students are lack of vocabulary.Then time allocation for English learning is also limited. From that background of study above, the statements of problems of this research is chunking strategy improve the students reading skill of the eight grade students of MTS Al-Islam GenilangitPoncol, Magetan in the academic year of 2014/2015.The purpose of study is to know increase of chunking strategy toward reading skill of the eight grade students of MTS Al-Islam GenilangitPoncol, Magetan in the academic year of 2014/2015. The subject of this research was the students of the eighth grade class VIII of MTS Al-Islam GenilangitPoncol, Magetan, which consisted of 20 students. This research was done in four meetings from two cycles .The research was started on August03, 2014 until August 10, 2014. The researcher used three research instruments. They were: observation check list, questionnaire, and test. Based on the result of this research, it was concluded that implementation of chunking strategy could improve the students’ reading skill at the eighth grade of the MTS Al-Islam GenilangitPoncolMagetan in 2014/2015 academic year. The questionnaire result showed that the students were interested in this method. It was seen from the result of the questionnaire I was 63,88% andquestionnaire II was 85,38%. The observation check list result showed that the students become active during teaching learning process. It was seen from the result of the observation checklist cycle I was 57.14% up to 82.14% in cycle II. The test showed that there were 12 students who got low score under basic minimum standard score 75 in cycle 1. The result of test in cycle 1 the students got above the KKM was 40%. Then in cycle 2 all of the students who got score above the KKM had improved become 100%. It means that the study had been successful using chunking strategy because all of the students got >75. Finally, the researcher concluded that English teachers can use Chunking Strategy in teaching reading. The next researcher can develop this strategy to get better result in teaching and learning process.
