Abstract

Abstract Natural resources in Indonesia are quite abundant so they can be utilized as well as possible, one of which is natural fibers such as coconut fiber and palm fiber. Therefore, this research was carried out regarding the effect of a mixture of palm fiber and coconut fiber as a reinforcement for composite materials and resin as the matrix. The aim of this research is to find the effect of a mixture of coconut fiber and palm fiber on bending strength and microstructure of composite materials. The technique used in making composite material specimens uses the hand lay-up technique. The results from observing the microstructure of the bottom still contain bubbles/trapped air, the fiber orientation varies and the fibers can be distributed evenly. For the results of the bending test, namely in the 1st variation the volume fraction 20% coconut fiber: 60% resin gets an average value of 36.88 MPa, the 2nd variation volume fraction 20% palm fiber: 60% resin gets an average value of 42. 363 MPa, 3rd variation volume fraction 20% coconut fiber: 20% palm fiber: 60% resin gets an average value of 39, 363 MPa, 4th variation volume fraction 25% coconut fiber: 15% palm fiber: 60% resin gets yield 40,816 MPa, the 5th variation of volume fraction 15% coconut fiber: 25% palm fiber: 60% resin obtained a yield of 42,696 MPa. It can be concluded that the results of the highest bending test/best performance in the 5th variation by increasing the volume of palm fiber can increase the bending strength of the composite material Keywords: Alloy, Palm Fiber, Coconut Fiber, Performance
