Abstract
The increasing use of plastic in modern life has a negative impact on the environment. The increase in plastic waste can only be prevented through the recycling process, or utilizing plastic waste to make appropriate products. Plastic waste is an artificial material that can be applied to prepare a composite material. From this research, a composite was produced that utilizes PP and PVC plastic waste as filler fiber, and polyester resin as the binder. In the process of molding the composite using the hand lay up method with the shape and size of the specimen using the ASTM D638 type 1 standard. The results of testing the hardness of PP and PVC plastic fiber composites with a polyester resin binder produced the highest value at a ratio of 12.5% PP plastic: 12.5 % PVC plastic: 75% polyester resin with a hardness value of 2,583 N/mm², and the lowest value is in the ratio 5% PP plastic: 5% PVC plastic: 90% polyester resin with a hardness value of 1,860 N/mm². It can be concluded that the more plastic mixed into the polyester resin will increase the hardness value of a composite. The advantages of composites are that the constituent materials are light, strong, durable and easy to obtain.
