Abstract
Key Word: Vocabulary Cards, Speaking Speaking is one of the productive skills and also one of the basic skills in communication which has to be considered as the judgment for knowing if students are learning a language. Speaking is the main skill that has an important role in learning language because it can indicate one’s fluency. In teaching speaking, there are some problems occur. To solve the problems in teaching and learning process, we can use various methods, strategies, and media. One of the media is Vocabulary Cards. Vocabulary Cards are small cards (about 4cm x 3cm) with the second language word on one side and the first language translation on the other. Vocabulary Cards can make the students get the spirit to learn English because Vocabulary Cards are the fun media that can improve the students’ idea, so they do not feel bored. Statement of the problem of this research is “Can the use of Vocabulary Cards improve students’ speaking skill at the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Badegan Ponorogo in the academic year of 2015/2016?”. The purpose of this research is “To know whether the use of Vocabulary Cards improve students’ speaking skill at the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Badegan Ponorogo in the academic year of 2015/2016” The subject of this Classroom Action Research was the students of the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Badegan Ponorogo in the academic year of 2015/2016 which consisted of 32 students. This research was started on August 4th, 2015 until August 18th, 2015. This research was conducted in two cycles. The writer used three research instruments. There are observation checklist, questionnaire, and test. Based on the result of this research, the use of Vocabulary Cards can improve students’ speaking skill at the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Badegan Ponorogo. It was seen from the improvement of the average score of the students’ test from 71.67 in cycle I up to 82.03 in cycle II. The questionnaire result showed that students enjoyed and became active during teaching learning process. Finally, the researcher gives suggestion to English teachers that they can use Vocabulary Cards as alternative media in teaching speaking. The next researcher can develop this media by using various kinds media to get better result in teaching learning process.
