Abstract
Key Words: Problems in Mastering Vocabulary Vocabulary is one of the three essential elements in English that constitute language knowledge, unfortunately not all of the students are aware with this importance. Whereas to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skill in English, they have to master the vocabulary. Apparently the students have the problems that hamper them to master the vocabulary. Therefore to find the problems of the students in mastering vocabulary, there should be a research. This research was designed to find out the problems were faced by the students and to investigate how the students could solve their problems in mastering vocabulary. The subject of this research was ten students at ninth grade in Srifarida Baru Witya School. The research that used participant observation to observe deeply was started on 02 November 2014 until 23 March 2015. Then it was continued with the interview by phone on 1 August until 15 August 2015. The interview was used as the instrument of this research and descriptive qualitative method was used in analyzing the data. The result of the research showed that the students had the problems in pronuciation, spelling and meaning understanding in the vocabulary. They prefer to use reading and listening skill to get new vocabulary than use speaking and writing skill. With the findings above, it is suggested to the students can improve their speaking and writing skill besides reading and listening skill to master the vocabulary because in English there are two parts of skill, productive and receptive. Then They have to more explore many media which are related to English to master the vocabulary. Besides that, it is hoped to the readers can get new information and knowledge of this research about the problems and problem solving in mastering vocabulary in order to they can apply in their lives to be better students that can be experts in English vocabulary.
