Abstract
Keywords: Talented Students, Learning Style, Competition English News reading competition creates many talented students because they are not only study inside the class but also develop their talent outside by joining the competition. This research aims to describe the talented students’ learning style in preparing English News Reading competition. The talented student is student who has awareness and knowledge of the basic skills by providing them with enrichment activities that provide ever renewable knowledge, and encourage them to think critically and creatively, and develop their personalities from various aspects. Learning style is the characteristics, strength, and preferences in the way people receive and process information. The method of this research was qualitative method. The data was taken from the field research in SMAN 3 Ponorogo, particularly the member of SEC ( Smaga English Club ). The subjects of this research are members who have ever joined and achieved the winner of English news reading competition minimal in Madiun Regency and who achieved the winner of English news reading competition minimal three times in regency or province even national. The data analysis in this research was used Field Analysis of Miles and Huberman Model. The descriptive qualitative method was used in presenting the result of data analysis. The members of SEC applied two learning styles in preparing English news reading competition; they were auditory and visual learning styles. Listening to the news anchor’s voice as the example, then understanding or even imitating the way of the news anchors read the news including pronunciation, intonation and fluency were the auditory learning style that the members used. While for visual learning style, they watched videos on YouTube and the senior’s performances previously to create some new ideas on performances including body language, eye contact, expression and also costume. The auditory and visual learning style has chosen by the member of SEC in order to get the effective learning with their own way. By using the appropriate learning style, they got many achievements in English News Reading Competition. Therefore, researcher suggests for teachers and coach should help the students to find appropriate learning style for their learning process. It would be better for them when they could apply it toward the other subjects, not only in preparing the competition but also learning process.
