Abstract

Key Words: Writing, Crossword Puzzle Game Writing is an exploration experience in life and make story for other people. Writing is just not about writing anything but it can people learn to communicate with other people. Writing is one of the most difficult aspects for students to master. The students usually have not understood correct spelling, organizing words and ideas and following grammar. In teaching writing, the teacher can use suitable media to improve the students’ skill in writing. The media is crossword puzzle game. Crossword puzzle game is like doing a certain type of brain exercise. Then, in crossword puzzle game, the students can recognize the most important ideas and information from writing and converting it in crossword puzzle with their own words to help them understand and remembered what they write. Using this game will help students focus on key ideas written down in their own words. The media is very enjoyable because the students can explore their ideas by seeing crossword puzzle game. The subject of this research was the eight students of SMP Negeri 2 Ponorogo in academic year of 2016/2017 that consisted of 32 students. The statement of problem of this research is how can crossword puzzle game improve the students’ writing skill at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Ponorogo in academic year of 2016/2017? The purpose of this research is to improve students’ writing skill using crossword puzzle game. The kind of this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was conducted in two cycles. The research was started on August 15, 2016 until August 25, 2016. Then, the researcher used three instruments; they were observation checklist, questionnaire, and test. Based on the result of this research, the implementation of crossword puzzle game could improve students’ writing skill at that school. It could be seen from the improvement of average students’ score 74.39in cycle I up to 80.53 in cycle II. The questionnaire result showed the students that students enjoyed, interested, and became active during teaching learning process of 74.65% in cycle I up to 81.03% in cycle II. The observation checklist result showed 71.42% in cycle I up to 82.14% in cycle II. Finally based on the result that had found, researcher concluded that crossword puzzle game is the effective media to teach English especially in writing skill. It was because this media can improve the students’ writing skill. The researcher also gives suggestion that English teacher can use crossword puzzle game in teaching writing. In addition the next researcher can develop this media.
