Abstract
Keyword : Slang, Social Media Slang is informal language which is very popular for teenager in daily communication and social media. The kinds of word formation which form slang language are abbreviation, blending, borrowing, and coinage. Students of university usually use all kinds of those slangs. However, slang language is non standard language so it can give impact for students both of positive and negative. This research was held on Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo, Jl. Budi Utomo number 10 Ponorogo. The research design is qualitative research especially phenomenological study. Researcher used qualitative observation and qualitative interview as the data collection technique in this research. Based on the finding, slang language which is used by fourth semester of English Department students in social media especially facebook, twitter, and whatsapp are abbreviation, blending, borrowing, and coinage word formation. Slang words which formed by abbreviation process are Thx, HBD, sis, etc. The blending words are copast, kinda, and modem. The borrowing words are hp, ko, flu, etc. Then, coinage words are selfie, cus, gengs, etc. In addition, the impacts of slang language used in social media are people can deliver information easier but it can arouse bad impact in writing (error in grammar). Finally, the researcher proposed suggestion to students in university for using slang language in social media and daily communication wisely by considering time, place, and condition
