Abstract

Keywords: Learning Strategy, Speaking Skill The objective this research was describe learning strategies to improve speaking skill at the third semester of Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Oxford (1990:8) said that learning strategies are specific actions taken by the learner to make learning, easier, faster, more enjoyable, more self-directed, more effective, and more transferrable to new situation. The important of learning strategies are to make the students more effectively in learning of speaking ability. In this research, the researcher use qualitative research. The researcher use interview and questionnaire to collect the data. The subject is the students third semester of Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo in academic year 2017/2018. The respondents were seventeen students. This research was conducted on 3rd January, 2019. The results of the research are students third semesters Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo most all of combined the six strategies. Namely, memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy, affective strategy and social strategy. The most of students used affective strategy and followed by memory strategy. Strategies that were seldom used by students, namely social, compensation, metacognitive, and cognitive strategies. The implementation of students learning strategy was the mood students to study were boost again, the student can improve their vocabulary and pronunciation, and the students can improve fluently in speaking English. The finding of the research, the researcher gave suggestion that first, the teacher can give motivation the students and can find the method which will attract their learning passion. Second, the students always remind their self to be better again while speaking ability for facing the future. Third, the reader may be it can help the reader to improve knowledge about learning strategies in English learning.
