Abstract

Keywords : Learning strategies, Speech English Speech Competition is an activity to gain speaking skill. To join the competition, students should have learning strategies to solve the problems related to competition. Having learning strategies also makes student feel easy in the process of learning speech. By using strategies also help student to understand materials when joining competition. Joining competition is one of the ways to measure the competence of student and help to develop self-confidence. Student should have a good strategy to achieve the goals in the future. Students being master speech well by joining English Speech Competition and as a means to build speaking ability often practice speech. Speech is a part of speaking skill. Futhermore, speech is an activity when someone stands in front of audience to talk and give statement about something. In conducting the research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method to analyze learning strategies used by The First Winner of English Speech Competition. The research conducted in Senior High School One Ponorogo. The subject of this research is one student who ever joined in English Speech Competition and became the winner. This research used observation, interview and documentation as the data collection technique and used Miles and Huberman models to analyze the data. The researcher chose one student of the winners as research subject because she has good speech in English language and a lot of achievements. To prepare English Speech Competition she applied some strategies in learning process, those are a personal learning strategies includes are matter, manner, method and formulaic speech strategies. Those strategies help the winner prepare English Speech Competition. Thus, by using learning strategies the winner can increase her confidence and feel easy to speak English. In Speech competition to become the winner is difficult. Student should master about pronunciation, intonation, high confidence and so on. But she has a big motivation to show best performance and reach her dreams. Good learning strategies gives positive impact to the winner tobe always having a big motivation in learning English. Big dream is very influential on her success.
