Abstract
Key Words: Report Text, Teaching materials, Authentic materials, Reading Reading report text is one of the points that must be mastered by students in junior high school grade. Report text is a text that contains information that describe something in reality. Authentic materials are print, video, and audio materials student encounter in their daily lives, such as magazine, newspaper, job application, radio program, tv program, and etc. The statement of problem of this research is “Does using authentic material in teaching report text influence the student reading ability?”. The purpose of this research is to measure the influence of using authentic materials in teaching report text towards the student reading ability. The population in this study were eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Pulung. The technique for determining the sample was purposive sampling and obtained 32 students of VIII C as the experiment class and 32 students of VIII D as the control class. The validity used content validity and reliability used Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level. The data analysis technique used t-test. From the results of posttest, t-count was 5,862 with df = 62, consulted with t-table at the significance level of 5% and df = 62 was obtained 1.999. This result indicated that t-count was higher than t-table (5,862> 1.999). It means that there were significant difference scores between the experiment class and the control class. From the result of posttest mean score of experiment class was obtained 84,53 with increasing score of 28,37 from 50,16. Those are higher than the control class which was obtained 73,13 with increasing score of 13,29 from 59,84. Thus it can be concluded that there was influence of using authentic material in teaching reading report text.
