There are many ways to teaching Speaking, one of them was by using debate method as a teaching method. This way was suitable to make enjoy in teaching English of Junior High School. With this method the students become interested and enjoyable in learning English especially speaking, because speaking was one of the most important factors to use a language. This study was based on the importance speaking skill. The statement problems of this study were: (1) Does the debate method improve students’ speaking mastery to the eighth grade students at SMPN 2 Ponorogo in academic year 2013 / 2014? (2) How does the implementation of using debate method to improve students’ speaking mastery to the eighth grade students at SMPN 2 Ponorogo in academic year 2013 / 2014? According to the statement of problem above, the purposes of study were: (1) To find out whether debate method can improve students’ speaking mastery to the eighth grade students at SMPN 2 Ponorogo in academic year 2013 / 2014. (2) To find out the result of the implementation of using debate method to improve students’ speaking mastery to the eighth grade students at SMPN 2 Ponorogo in academic year 2013 / 2014. The design of research used by the researcher in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was a good strategy to solve the problem in the classroom. Classroom action research was conducted by the researcher to know the condition and ability of students in the class. The result of this study showed that using debate method can improve students’ speaking skill. This is proven by the result of observation checklist I was 67.85% and observation checklist II was 78.57%. Then, the result of questionnaire sheet I was 68.32% and questionnaire sheet II was 81.54%. The students’ score of speaking test that improved in every cycle. In the first cycle, the students’ average score was 74.50 and in the second cycle students got 81.12. Finally, the researcher concluded that the implementation of debate method to improving students’ speaking skill at eighth grade especially VIII-I in SMPN 2 Ponorogo was success. Because all of students reached to English KKM, the minimum score to passed exam of English in eighth grade SMPN 2 Ponorogo this semester was 76. The students also had high motivation that stimulates them to be more active in the class.
