Abstract

Key Words: Writing Skill, Think Pair and Share Technique and Descriptive Text Writing is something scaring for the students. They feel writing is difficult to do. They feel not sure with their ability in writing. When the teacher gave them writing task they received it with the word ‘’oh no’’ or ‘’ not again’’. In English we can use technique as a tool to improve students’ skill. Here, researcher uses technique to improve the students’ ability on writing by using TPS (Think Pair and Share)” technique. TPS (Think Pair and Share) technique is a part of the Cooperative Learning. In Cooperative Learning, the students will discover and comprehend a difficult concept more easily if they can talk with each other about problem. So, Cooperative Learning is working together to accomplish shared goals (Johnson & Johnson, 1998). In accordance to the fact above, the statement of problem in this study is : Does Think Pair and Share technique improve students’ writing skill in descriptive text and the purpose of this study is to know the improvement students’ writing skill in descriptive text through Think, Pair and Share. The research was done in SMP 1 Muhammadiyah Ponorogo started on 22nd July 2013 until 3rd August 2013. The subject of this research is class VII.A consists of 15 students. By using action research methodology, the researcher applied the technique for student of class VIII.A The research was done in two cycles. The researcher used three research instruments. There are observation, questionnaire and test. The result of observation and questionnaire in cycle 1 can be concluded that the students were confused and not interested. But, in cycle 2 the students gave good response. They looked so enthusiast, enjoying and interested when teaching learning process used the technique. The result of test in cycle 1, the students obtained an average score 66,93. The mean is lower than the target learning mastery. But, after the researcher made improvements in the second cycle, the score is increasing to average value of 79,00. It can be concluded, that the teaching writing by using Think, Pair and Share technique can improve students’ writing skill especially in descriptive text. Therefore, teacher should use variation teaching method, strategy, and technique in order to improve students’ English skill and the students will become interest in English lesson.
