Abstract
Key Words: Reading Skill, Group Discussion Reading is one of four basic language skills that’s important in English learning. In teaching reading, we can use various methods to improve students’ reading skill. The method is Group Discussion. Group discussion is a meeting or conversation between two or more people who discuss a particular topic in the spotlight together. In Group discussion, group members appointed moderator (discussion leader), set goals, and agenda to be obeyed. The problem of this research is how can the implementation of Group Discussion improve reading skill at the eight grade students of SMPN 3 Sawoo Ponorogo in the 2011/2012 Academic Year and the purpose of this research is to know the implementation of Group Discussion improve reading skill at the eight grade students of SMPN 3 Sawoo Ponorogo in the 2011/2012 academic year. The subject of this research was the eight grade students of SMPN 3 Sawoo Ponorogo in the 2011/2012 academic year which consisted of 26 students. The classroom action research was done from 25th July – 2nd August 2012. This research was conducted in two cycles. The writer used three research instruments. There are observation check list, questionnaire, and test. Based on the result of this research in cycle I was not enough. The mean score is 69.57 and it did not reach the minimum score 75. In percentage, the result in cycle I is 46.16% and it did not reach the target (70%). It increased in cycle 2 that the mean score is 79.50 and the percentage is 80.76%. Finally, the researcher gives suggestion that English teachers can use Group Discussion method in teaching reading. The students can practice their ability in daily activities. For further researchers, they can develop this method to get a better result in teaching and learning process.
