Abstract

This research aims to investigate how the learners use social strategy in debate class. Specifically this research is conducted to find the answer related to (1) How do the learners ask question, (2) how do the learners cooperate with others, (3) how do the learners empathize with others. The research design was qualitative descriptive. The research subject were 17 participants of debate class at Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Data collection of this research was conducted through observation and interview. The finding of the research show that the students’ way of asking question was by re asking what they did not understand (Asking for clarification), asking conversational partners to repeat themselves (Asking for verification) and asking conversational partners to correct their partner’s utterances (Asking for correction). The students’ way to use cooperating with others was by cooperating with their friends to improve speaking ability. The students’ way of empathizing with others was by trying to respect every different opinion in the debate activities which consisted of listening to every opposition, not interrupting and giving good feedbacks. The conclusion from the research about the usage of social strategies were re asking the meaning of what the opposite partner had said, asking the opposite partner to repeat what they had said and also asking them to correct what the speaker had said, cooperate with their friends to increase speaking skill, understanding the thoughts and feelings of the opposite speaking partner, accepting disagreement, and trying to give good responses towards difference opinions. According to the results from this research, the researcher’s suggestions for the readers and the next researchers are to add references and theories regarding to social strategies for creating good research in the future.
