Abstract
Key words: Reading skill, Make-A Match pairs The process of language teaching usually has covered four language skills. There are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Reading is one of four skills that must be learned by the students in learning English besides speaking, listening and writing. Reading is the process of constructing meaning from written texts. Meanwhile, reading skill is the process of constructing meaning through the dynamic interaction among: the readers’ existing knowledge, the information suggested by the text being read and the context of the reading situation. From the meaning of reading above, then the researcher wrote the statement of the problem was “ How Make-A match pairs can improve reading skill of eleventh grade students at SMA N 1 SAMPUNG?” and this study has a purpose to know the improving students reading skill by using Make-A match pairs at eleventh grade students in SMA N 1 SAMPUNG. To find this problem the researcher did the classroom action research. This classroom action research was done four times. The researcher began the classroom action research by doing preliminary study to obtain data then identifying and analyzing the problems. The classroom action research subject was eleventh grade students in SMA N 1 SAMPUNG especially class XI IPA of 23 students. The researcher chose this classroom because the students reading skill was low. The instruments used were of questionnaire, observation and test. The researcher could measure the students’ skill in teaching reading after the implementation of Make-A match method. The result of the test showed that in cycle I, The students got score under KKM was 47,82% and the students got score above KKM was 52,18% . In cycle II their score improved, 100% students got score above the KKM. The result of observation checklist showed that in cycle I the students’ percentage reached 15,94% and then, in cycle II they improved their score 51%. The questionnaire showed that in cycle I the percentage reached by the students’ was 69,56% and then in cycle II their score improved 84,05%. It means teaching reading by using Make-A match method can improve students reading skill at the eleventh grade, especially class XI-IPA in SMA N 1 SAMPUNG on 2013/2014 academic year. Finally, the researcher concludes that the students reading skill at eleventh grade in SMA N 1 SAMPUNG improved after the researcher doing classroom action research by using Make-A match pairs and the researcher give suggestion that ix English teachers can use Make-A match pairs as alternative method in teaching reading. The next researcher can develop this method by using various kinds of media to get the better result in teaching learning process.
