Abstract

Key words: Inside Outside Circle (IOC), Reading Skill Reading is one of skills in English. Reading is a process of combining information from a text and their own background knowledge to build meaning. However, some problems appear in reading process, students are always bored during reading process, they feel difficult to understand the English text, and they also don’t have confidence to read English literature. From these problems, the researcher used Inside Outside Circle (IOC) to solve. It is communicative approach strategy which gives opportunity for students to exchange their information based on the material from the Inside students to Outside or Outside students to Inside Circle. This strategy has some benefits for students, they are when students have appropriate “think time” the quality of their responses improves and their activities encourage community building among students during incorporating movement and interaction. This study is conducted to improve the students’ reading skill. The statement of problems are how the implementation Inside-Outside Circle (IOC) strategy improve students’ reading skill and Inside-Outside Circle (IOC) strategy can improve students’ reading skill. Besides, the purpose of study is implementating of Inside Outside Circle (IOC) strategy to improve students’ reading skill. This research was classroom action research. The subject of this research was the students of eleventh IPA 3 of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in the Academic Year of 2013/2014 which consisted 30 students. The researcher used 3 instruments; observation checklist, questionnaire, and test. The study was conducted in two cycles. Based on this research, the implementation of Inside Outside Circle (IOC) strategy was successful. It could be showed from cycle 1 that students’ activeness were not good enough and on the cycle 2 students’ activeness increased well. From cycle 1 students felt that English is difficult, they did not like English as subject, and had not practiced yet this strategy but in cycle 2, students enjoyed to practice this strategy and could make students’ motivation and spirit in learning process increased. Besides, students’ reading skill also improved after practicing this strategy, from cycle 1 there were 10 students got score under KKM, and on the cycle 2 students’ score was increased. All of the students got above of KKM. Finally, Inside Outside Circle (IOC) strategy is able to improve students’ reading skill at eleventh IPA 3 SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in Academic Year 2013/2014
