ABSTRACT Sofiah, Halimatus. 2021. The Students’ Difficulties in Translation (The Study on the Students’ English Language Education in Mastering Translation). Thesis. English Department, Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Advisors: (1) Niken Reti Indriastuti, M.Pd., (2) Diyah Atiek Mustikawati, M.Hum. Keywords: Translation, Difficulties The researcher found problem in the seventh semester students of FKIP Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo about the value of translation courses which decreased in almost all students, so the researcher conducted research related to this problem. This research aims to: (1) describe about students’ difficulties in translation. (2) describe students strategies to overcome the difficulties faced by students in translation. This research is a qualitative descriptive research with the subject is the seventh semester students of FKIP Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Data collection in this research were questionnaires and interviews. The instruments used to collect the data include list of interview questions and questionnaires about students’ difficulties in translation. Data analysis techniques were reviewed from the data obtained while verifying the data using triangulation of various sources. Based on this research, students faced difficulties in translation. From the questionnaire and interview, the researcher found that students faced difficulties in translation such as determine the division of syntactic function in sentences, determine the words which is singular or plural form, composing sentences that using the correct grammar, and translating words that related to social-culture, history, and religious culture. Students felt difficulties in translation especially in linguistic factor. In this research, the researcher also asked about what mistakes that students always done in translation and how to overcome the difficulties in translation. Students often make some mistakes in translation such as not checking the results of the translation again, errors in determining the position of the subject, verb, and object according to the correct syntactic function. Meanwhile, the way for students to overcome these difficulties is to practice a lot in translating, learn grammar more deeply, and discuss with friends or lecturers if there are difficulties. From this research, the researcher suggest that the lecturers had to improve their teaching on linguistic and non-linguistic factors because students faced difficulties on that factors and then provide a way to overcome these difficulties. Especially in linguistic factor, the lecturer should give more information so that the students can overcome the difficulties that students face and make a good translation without difficulties.
