Abstract

Key Terms: Speaking Ability, Time Token Method There are many languages in the world, one of them is English. It is an International language that many people all over the world use. In Indonesia, English is a foreign language and it is included as the subject in the school. There are four skills of English those are reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Speaking is the most important ability that has to be mastered by the students. Teaching speaking sometimes finds some difficulties. Based on the observation in SMP Negeri 1 Purwantoro, the problems of teaching speaking was most of the students were not confident and shy to speak English in the classroom. To solve these problems, English teachers should use interesting method to improve the students’ speaking ability. In this case, the researcher would apply Time Token as the Method. Time Token method is one small example of the democratic application learning in the learning process. This method would help students to train and develop social skill so that students do not dominate the conversation or silent in the classroom. In accordance to the fact above, the researcher formulated the statement of problem, “How can the implementation of Time Token method improve students’ speaking ability at the eighth grade student of SMP N 1 Purwantoro?”. While the purpose of the study is to describe the implementation of Time Token Method to improve students’ speaking ability at the eighth grade of SMP N 1 Purwantoro in 2013/2014 academic year. This classroom action research was done in SMP Negeri 1 Purwantoro started on January 20th until February 1st 2014. The subject of this research was class VIII D that consisted of 30 students. In collecting data, the researcher used three research instruments, those were observation checklist, questionnaire, and test. The result of the research was satisfying. The result of the test showed that in the first cycle was 13.33% who reached the minimum mastery criteria of the study and in the cycle 2 they improved to 100%. It means that all of the students had already passed the target of minimum mastery criteria. The result of observation checklist proved that the students’ activeness in the classroom was increasing. In the first cycle, the students tended to be passive learner, but in the cycle 2, they were more active in cooperating with group and doing the test. The result of questionnaire proved that the student’s motivation to join the speaking activities increased. In the first cycle, some of the students were not interested and motivated in learning speaking, but in the cycle 2, they were interested and enjoyed in studying English especially for speaking by using Time Token method. Finally, the researcher concluded that the implementation of Time Token Method could improve the students’ speaking ability at the eighth grade student of SMP N 1 Purwantoro.
