Abstract

Key Words: Reading Skill, Storybook, Reciprocal Teaching Reading is a process of decoding message in which the students need their own experiences and knowledge. Elementary school students are the beginners in learning English, so it is common if they have some problems in learning English especially reading. Many English classes in Indonesia are now attended by many young learners. As a result this class was not effective, as it is in SDN 2 Nologaten Ponorogo. Students’ reading skill at fifth grade in SDN 2 Nologaten Ponorogo was still low because large number students in the class cannot focus to what they read. To overcome the problem the researcher tried to give solution to improve students’ reading skill through storybook by using reciprocal teaching. The researcher choose this storybook because it is interesting for the students. The research consists of 31 students. To collect data, the researcher used observation checklist, questionnaire, and test. The research design used classroom action research. The steps of the research are planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research was started on March 6th, 2014 until March 27th, 2014. This research was conducted in two cycles. Based on the result of this research, Improving the fifth grade students’ reading skill trough storybook reading by using reciprocal teaching at SDN 2 Nologaten Ponorogo in the 2013/2014 lesson year, it was seen at the beginning of process (cycle I), only 54.84% who got score above 70 and the final test (cycle II) the all students was more than 70. The questionnaire result showed that students enjoyed and become active during teaching learning process. At the end of research, the researcher concluded that it was successfully used storybook by reciprocal teaching method for teaching and learning process. Finally, the researcher gives suggestion that English teachers can use reciprocal teaching as alternative method in teaching reading. The next researcher can develop this method by using various kinds of the media to get the better result in teaching learning process.
