Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Advisors: (1) Bambang Harmanto, M.Pd, (2) Ana Maghfiroh, M.Pd. Key Words: reading skill, cooperative script method. Language is a means of communications. Here, English is considered as a foreign language. The purpose of language learning is to be able to use language for communication. Therefore, language teaching should be devoted to the achievement of ability to use language for communication. The process of language teaching usually has covered four skill components. They are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Reading is a unique human skill which people tend to perform somewhat below maximum capacity. Reading is not simply looking. It involves deriving meaning from the printed word. Reading is one of English language skills that are considered important for one’s growth as an individual in many aspects of life. Reading is a skill which must be develops, and can only develop by means of extensive and continual practice. Students learn to read and to read better by reading. The statement of problem of this research “How is the implementation of Cooperative script method to improve the reading skill at the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo of academic year 2013/2014?” The purpose of this research are “To know the implementation of Cooperative Script Method to improve students reading skill in English teaching of the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo of academic year 2013/2014”. The research was done in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo started on January 8th until 18th, 2014. The subject of this research was the second year students of eighth grade that consist of 18 students. The researcher uses three research instruments; they are test, questionnaire, and observation checklist. By using action research methodology, the researcher applied the method for students of class eighth grade. The research was done in two cycles. The result of test in cycle 1 got average score 71.66. The score was not reached the average score yet. But, after the researcher made improvements in cycle 2, the score was increased become 84.83. The result of observation sheet showed that the students are being active in teaching and learning process. The data of questionnaire showed that the students interested in reading descriptive text by using cooperative script. Finally, the researcher concluded that the result of this research showed there is improving students’ reading skill using cooperative script method at the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo.
