Hanifah, Ira Yustin.2021.The English Teachers’ Problem in Implementing HOTS in Their Teaching at Senior High School in Ponorogo Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Advisors: (1) Dr. Bambang Harmanto, M.Pd. (2) Siti Asiyah, M.Pd. In this 21st century, it requires people to have the abilities that exist in that century, namely critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Realizing this, the Indonesian government incorporated these abilities through the 2013 curriculum by implementing Higher Order Thinking Skills. In practice HOTS is also applied to subjects that are included in the national exam as a determinant of student graduation. English is also included in the lessons that apply HOTS in its learning but in reality the English teachers still experience problems in implementing HOTS. Based on this problems, the purpose of this study was to determine the problems and solutions applied by English teachers in Senior High School especially in Ponorogo related to the application of HOTS. The design of this research is qualitative research. Researchers used qualitative interviews as a data collection technique in this study. The subjects of this study were five English teachers who were taken from several schools in Ponorogo. From the findings, it was found the problems that occurred were due to 2 factors, namely from students and time in preparation for implementing HOTS. The problems of students are heterogeneous classes, students are not motivated to learn English, and the negative impact of the zoning system. Meanwhile, the problem with the preparation for implementing HOTS is take more time.The solutions given by teachers to problems from students are heterogeneous grouping, providing intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and providing more HOTS exercises for students so that students' abilities increase. For the length of time to prepare for implementing HOTS, the solution is resetting the time in preparation for implementing HOTS. Finally, the researchers gave suggestions that institution is expected to provide more training in the implementation of HOTS in learning to overcome the limited knowledge of English teachers about HOTS implementation.
