Abstract
Welding of different types of metal between cemented carbide and carbon steel using the TIG Brazing method and will be used as drill bits and cutting tools. This study is about the effect of variations in TIG welding currents on welded joints on shear compression tests and microstructures. The current variations used in this study were 60 A, 80 A and 100 A. The base metal used cemented carbide with type YG6 and carbon steel SS400, for the filler metal, CuSi. The initial stage of this research is to prepare SS400 steel and cemented carbide, then the steel is cut and welded using current variations of 60 A, 80 A and 100 A with TIG welding. The next process is a shear compression test, then the material is cut and the surface is cleaned for microstructure testing. From the tests that have been carried out, the average value of the highest compressive strength is at the current variation of 60 A with a value of 22.2 kN, then it decreases in value at the variation of 80 A to 16.9 kN, the lowest value is at the current variation of 100 A with a value of 10, 2 kN. Furthermore, the average value of the highest shear stress at variation of 60 A is 148N/mm2 and the lowest value is at 100 A welding current which is 67 N/mm2. The results of the microstructure test show that the higher the current, the more enriched the Cu content will be and will affect the size and spacing of the Si grains, in the 80A and 100A variations there are hole defects in the weld results which will result in a decrease in the strength of the welded joint.
