Abstract

Students majoring in subjects other than English are now required to communicate in English as well. The goal of this study is to identify the difficulties that non-English students face when learning to speak, as well as the strategies that they commonly employ. This study employs a variety of methods. The researcher use interviews to collect data. The participants are six UMPO non-English department students from the faculties of health, engineering, informatics, education, and Islamic religion took part in this study. Six students were purposefully chosen by the researcher to be informants and two Lecturers that teaches English at non-English department majority. According to the findings of this study, students struggle because they are afraid of making mistakes, lack proficiency, are uninterested in speaking English, and lack confidence in using English. Students have also suggested strategies such as preparing and practicing with friends, remaining silent, listening to English songs, and watching western movies, with the latter preferring to speak English with friends rather than family.
