Abstract

The development and increase in the number of vehicles in the high transportation sector have an impact on the decreasing fossil fuels and decreasing air quality. The national fuel needs continue to increase while the stock of fossil fuels is decreasing, so it is necessary to process vegetable oils to be used as fuel such as palm oil. Palm oil (Crude Palm Oil) is one of the alternative energy sources (biodiesel). The purpose of this study was to determine the engine performance and exhaust emissions of a 1-cylinder diesel engine that uses a mixture of Biodiesel fuel from palm oil and Ethanol. By using the experimental method, the test was carried out with several tests for each sample. This study compared five different fuels, including 100% Biosolar, B90E10, B80E20, B70E30, and 100% Biodiesel. The study began by mixing biodiesel and ethanol fuels, then testing the characteristics of each fuel in the laboratory. The next step is testing engine performance including: engine power, engine torque, fuel consumption, and exhaust emissions. The results of the engine performance test showed an increase in engine power and torque on the B80E20 fuel mixture, power of 2.38 kW and torque of 15.17 Nm. Thermal efficiency showed the highest results on B80E20 fuel of 19.47%. The results of fuel consumption got the lowest value on B80E20 fuel of 432.69 gr/kWh. While the results of the exhaust emission test produced the lowest value on B80E20 fuel of 48.26%. B80E20 fuel is the fuel that produces the greatest power and torque, the lowest fuel consumption value, and the best exhaust emissions.
