Abstract

Key Words: Problems in Mastering Vocabulary
Vocabulary is one of the three essential elements in English that constitute
language knowledge, unfortunately not all of the students are aware with this
importance. Whereas to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skill in
English, they have to master the vocabulary. Apparently the students have the
problems that hamper them to master the vocabulary. Therefore to find the
problems of the students in mastering vocabulary, there should be a research.
This research was designed to find out the problems were faced by the
students and to investigate how the students could solve their problems in
mastering vocabulary. The subject of this research was ten students at ninth grade
in Srifarida Baru Witya School. The research that used participant observation to
observe deeply was started on 02 November 2014 until 23 March 2015. Then it
was continued with the interview by phone on 1 August until 15 August 2015.
The interview was used as the instrument of this research and descriptive
qualitative method was used in analyzing the data.
The result of the research showed that the students had the problems in
pronuciation, spelling and meaning understanding in the vocabulary. They prefer
to use reading and listening skill to get new vocabulary than use speaking and
writing skill.
With the findings above, it is suggested to the students can improve their
speaking and writing skill besides reading and listening skill to master the
vocabulary because in English there are two parts of skill, productive and
receptive. Then They have to more explore many media which are related to
English to master the vocabulary. Besides that, it is hoped to the readers can get
new information and knowledge of this research about the problems and problem
solving in mastering vocabulary in order to they can apply in their lives to be
better students that can be experts in English vocabulary.
