Abstract
The effectiveness of the radiator in cooling the temperature in the engine is
in line with the performance of a radiator. When the car engine is working, the
cooling system work process also occurs continuously which has an impact on the
occurrence of various problems in the radiator, one of which is corrosion of its
components. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of sodium
chromate as an inhibitor of the corrosion rate in car radiator
components and to identify the types of corrosion that occur in car radiator
components in aquades environment. This study applies an experimental method to
find the corrosion rate that occurs in 12 car radiator specimens with the addition
of sodium chromate inhibitors with variations in concentration, namely 0%, 0.3%,
0.5%, and 0.7% in a volume of 3.5 liters of aquades with a time span of 8 hours for
10 days. The results of the study showed that the use of Sodium Chromate which is effective and efficient as a corrosion rate inhibitor is at a
concentration of 0.7% where the three specimens did not experience weight loss,
with an initial weight and final weight of 1.49 so that the average corrosion rate is
0 mmpy. The type of corrosion shown is pitting corrosion. As an effort for good
evaluation and contribution to car users, it is better to use an inhibitor with a higher
concentration so that the corrosion rate can be minimized which also has an impact
on the life of the radiatorrate can be minimized which also has an impact on the
service life of the radiator.
