Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that causes hyperglycemia and complications in other organs. One of the absolute requirements for achieving therapeutic effectiveness and improving patient quality of life is compliance. Compliance with treatment management is one of the five pillars of successful DM management. Nurses have a role as educators to help clients learn about health. The aim of this research is to analyze the influence of the role of nurses as educators on medication adherence in diabetes mellitus patients.
This research method is quantitative research with a cross-sectional approach which was carried out using a purposive sampling technique on 71 respondents suffering from diabetes mellitus at the Internal Medicine Polyclinic at Aisyiyah Hospital Ponorogo. This research method uses data collection techniques carried out by providing an instrument in the form of a questionnaire on the role of nurses and adherence to taking medication which is then tested using the Spearman-rank test.
The results of this study showed that the role of nurses as educators in the Internal Medicine Polyclinic at RSU 'Aisyiyah Ponorogo was in the sufficient category as many as 49 respondents (69.0%), and compliance with taking medication in Diabetes mellitus patients in the Internal Medicine Polyclinic had the most respondents with low compliance, 60 respondents (84.5%). The results of this study prove that there is no relationship between the role of nurses as educators and adherence to taking medication in patients with diabetes mellitus with a value of (p=0.709).
It can be concluded that even though the nurse's role is adequate or even good there is no relationship with medication adherence. Even so, nurses are expected to continue to educate and motivate patients to continue taking DM medication, while the advice for patients is to increase compliance with taking medication to improve quality of life and avoid complications.
