Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Journalistic Code of Ethics in the coverage of violent crimes against women by local television media, focusing on the case of a woman who was mutilated and found in a suitcase in Ngawi, as reported by KompasTV Madiun. The aim of this research is to assess the extent to which ethical journalism principles—specifically Articles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 are applied during the production of news that involves sensitive content about victims.This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through news documentation and in-depth interviews with the KompasTV Madiun editorial team, including field reporters, visual editors, presenters, and the coverage coordinator. The findings were analyzed by correlating the field data with the ethical standards outlined in the Indonesian Journalistic Code of Ethics.The results show that KompasTV Madiun has generally implemented most of the ethical principles procedurally, such as verifying facts, censoring graphic visuals, and protecting the identity of victims. However, several shortcomings were identified, including the use of contextual information that could lead to indirect identification of the victim, the premature use of the term "perpetrator" before a legal verdict, and the tendency toward sensational headlines and narratives. These findings highlight the importance of applying journalistic ethics not only technically but also empathetically and humanely, especially in reporting on violence against women.
