Abstract

In patients with hyperthyroidism, thyroid hormone production increases,
which impacts basal metabolic rate, stimulates gluconeogenesis and lipolysis,
leading to weight loss. Weight loss due to hyperthyroidism will gradually improve
after patients comply with medication. This study aimed to determine the
relationship between medication adherence and weight gain in hyperthyroidism
patients at the Internal Medicine Clinic at Aisyiyah Ponorogo Hospital.
The study used a quantitative correlation research design with a cross
sectional approach. This study was conducted from May to June 2025 at the
Internal Clinic of Aisyiyah Ponorogo Hospital. The population in this study were
all 516 hyperthyroid patients. A sample of 84 respondents was selected using a
purposive sampling technique. The independent variable was medication
adherence and the dependent variable was weight gain. The instruments used
were the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) questionnaire and a
weight observation sheet. Data analysis used the Chi-Square test with α (0.05).
The results showed that half of the respondents had moderate medication
adherence, 42 respondents (50%), and almost all of them experienced weight
gain, 69 respondents (82.14%). The Chi-Square test and Fisher’s Exact test
yielded a p-value of 0.000 ≤ α (0.05), thus Ha was accepted, indicating a
relationship between medication adherence and weight gain in hyperthyroid
patients at the Internal Clinic at Aisyiyah Ponorogo Hospital.
The results of this study encourage healthcare professionals to increase
motivation and education for hyperthyroid patients undergoing treatment,
encouraging them to adhere to their medication regimen as prescribed. They
should also educate patients' families to remind them to take their medication.
