Abstract
The concept of sustainable development encourages the utilization of eco-friendly materials across various fields, including the development of composite materials. This study aims to produce environmentally friendly composites based on corn husk fiber, PVC, and polyester resin. The manufacturing process involved mixing PVC and polyester resin, then pouring the mixture into molds that had been pre-filled with corn husk fibers. The composites were tested through tensile tests, flexural (bending) tests, and macrostructural observations to detect the presence of air voids in the fracture areas of the samples.
The material composition included several variations, namely: Corn husk fiber 25% : PVC 25% : Resin 50%, Corn husk fiber 20% : PVC 30% : Resin 50%, Corn husk fiber 30% : PVC 20% : Resin 50%, Corn husk fiber 35% : PVC 15% : Resin 50%, Corn husk fiber 50% : Resin 50%, and PVC 50% : Resin 50%.
The tensile test results showed that the composition of 50% corn husk fiber and 50% resin provided the highest average tensile strength, reaching 909.56 N with a tensile stress of 27.27 MPa. This indicates that corn husk fiber contributes significantly to enhancing the tensile strength of the composite. Meanwhile, the highest flexural strength was obtained from the mixture of 25% corn husk fiber, 25% PVC, and 50% resin, with a value of 32.62 MPa. Macrostructural observations revealed the presence of voids around the corn husk fibers and PVC. These voids are presumed to influence the mechanical properties of the composites, particularly their tensile and flexural strengths.
