Abstract

ABSTRACT
NURSING CARE FOR ASPHYXIA BABIES WITH GAS EXCHANGE DISORDER NURSING PROBLEMS
(Case Study in the Perinatology Room at Dr. Harjono Ponorogo Hospital)

Neonatal asphyxia generally occurs with marked hypercarbia, hypoxemia and acidosis. Asphyxia is a condition in which a newborn fails to initiate and maintain breathing spontaneously immediately after birth, which can result in ischemia, organ function failure, and decreased perfusion flow. The aim of this study is to provide nursing intervention to babies experiencing asphyxia with a focus on the problem of gas exchange disorders.
Implementation of nursing care for Mrs. H, who experienced asphyxia with gas exchange problems, was carried out in the Teratai room at RSUD Dr. Harjono Ponorogo for three days on 27-29 May 2025. The approach used in its implementation refers to the stages of the nursing process.
The assessment results showed that the patient experienced gas exchange disorders due to irregular, rapid and shallow breathing patterns, tachycardia, low blood oxygen levels, low pH and low PCO2. Nursing actions taken to address these problems included respiratory monitoring and oxygen administration via nasal cannula at 1 liter/minute. The evaluation results obtained expected outcome criteria, including decreased dyspnea and no longer shortness of breath, improved tachycardia, improved cyanosis and no bluish discoloration, and improved and regular breathing patterns with a RR of 36x/minute.
Providing nursing care to babies with asphyxia who experience gas exchange disorders is expected to be a reference for nurses in treating patients, especially in providing care to individuals with gas exchange disorders.
