Abstract

ABSTRACT
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SLEEP QUALITY AND THE INCIDENCE OF HYPERTENSION AMONG VENDORS AT PASAR LEGI IN PONOROGO REGENCY

By: Intan Nurbaiti

Hypertension is a common health problem and a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. One factor that can influence hypertension is sleep quality. Market vendors are at risk of experiencing sleep disturbances due to irregular working hours, heavy physical workload, and noisy work environments. This study aimed to determine the relationship between sleep quality and the incidence of hypertension among vendors at Pasar Legi in Ponorogo Regency. This research employed a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 75 vendors were selected using purposive sampling. The instruments used were the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire and a blood pressure measuring device. Data were analyzed using the Fisher-Exact test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that 45 respondents (60%) had poor sleep quality, and 67 respondents (89.3%) had hypertension. The Fisher-Exact test revealed a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between sleep quality and the incidence of hypertension. Interestingly, 15 respondents (20.5%) with hypertension had good sleep quality. This condition is likely caused by genetic factors, high sodium intake, excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption, psychological stress, lack of physical activity, and aging, all of which can trigger hypertension despite good sleep quality. These findings emphasize the need for promotive and preventive interventions that not only focus on improving sleep quality but also address other risk factors to reduce the incidence of hypertension among market vendors.
