Abstract

Acute bronchitis is an inflammation of the lower respiratory tract that often occurs in children, characterized by cough, increased secretions, and impaired gas exchange. This study aims to describe nursing care for a child with the nursing problem of ineffective airway clearance. A case study was conducted on a 1-year-old male patient in the Dahlia Ward of RSU Darmayu Ponorogo (July 8–10, 2025). Data were collected through interviews, observation, physical examination, and medical record review.
The assessment revealed that the patient experienced productive cough with rhonchi, a respiratory rate of 21 breaths/minute, and cyanosis of the lips. Lung examination showed bilateral rhonchi, hyperresonant percussion, and normal tactile fremitus. The main nursing diagnosis identified was ineffective airway clearance. Interventions included monitoring respiratory patterns, positioning in semi-Fowler’s position, educating on effective coughing techniques, maintaining hydration, administering nebulization, and collaborating for mucolytic administration.
The evaluation showed gradual improvement in the patient’s respiratory condition, indicated by the disappearance of rhonchi, normalization of respiratory rate (26 breaths/minute), and increased oxygen saturation. Suggestion Future research is expected to involve a larger number of respondents and compare the effectiveness of various management methods, so the results can be used as a reference for the prevention and management of acute bronchitis in children.
