Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a leading cause of
morbidity and mortality worldwide and can cause damage to the alveolar structure
and decreased lung tissue elasticity, which can lead to a decreased body's ability
to maintain adequate oxygen levels, leading to nursing problems related to gas
exchange disorders. Balloon blowing intervention can help improve oxygenation
by improving pulmonary ventilation and strengthening respiratory muscles.
Nursing care was carroed out at Dr. Harjono Ponorogo Regional Hospital
for 5 days, that is July 21-25, 2025. The method used was the nursing process
approach.
The assessment revealed that the client feels of shortness of breath,
palpitations, additional breath sounds, namely wheezing and oxygen saturation of
94%. The intervention carried out to address this problem was to apply balloon
blowing therapy three sets in one session per day, with each set the patient
wasasked to rest one minute. After five days of therapy, there was an increase in
oxygen saturation on the last day from 94% to 99% and a decrease in complaints
of shortness of breath. There were no additional breath sounds and the patient’s
breathing rhythm was regular.
Balloon blowing therapy effectively increases oxygen saturation in COPD
patients with gas exchange disorders. This therapy can be recommended as a non
pharmacological nursing intervention to support oxygenation improvement in
COPD patients.
