APPLICATION OF EUCALYPTUS OIL STEAM INHALATION THERAPY IN CHILDREN WITH PNEUMONIA AND INEFFECTIVE AIRWAY CLEARANCE AT MUHAMMADIYAH GENERAL HOSPITAL PONOROGO

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children, especially those under five years old, often resulting in the nursing problem of ineffective airway clearance. Ineffective airway clearance occurs when an individual is unable to expel secretions from the respiratory tract, disrupting ventilation and gas exchange. One non-pharmacological intervention is steam inhalation therapy with eucalyptus oil, which has mucolytic, mild bronchodilator, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. This study aims to examine the application of eucalyptus oil steam inhalation therapy in children with pneumonia and ineffective airway clearance at RSU Muhammadiyah Ponorogo. A case study was conducted on a patient, An. Z, aged 7 years, over five days from August 22 to 26, 2025. The nursing process included assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Assessment revealed the patient experienced dyspnea and productive cough with difficulty expectorating sputum.
The nursing diagnosis was ineffective airway clearance related to secretion accumulation. Implementation of eucalyptus oil steam inhalation therapy followed nursing standards, and evaluation showed improved respiratory rate, reduced cough, and the patient was able to perform the therapy independently. In conclusion, eucalyptus oil steam inhalation therapy is effective in enhancing airway clearance in children with pneumonia.
