Abstract

This study aims to explore the concept of information literacy from a Qur’anic perspective through a thematic analysis of Surah Al-‘Alaq (verses 1–5) and Surah Al-Hujurat (verse 6), based on Tafsir Al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach grounded in library research, the study seeks to demonstrate that Islamic principles such as Iqra’ and Tabayyun hold profound relevance in addressing the challenges of information literacy in the digital era.

Previous studies on information literacy have predominantly focused on the context of general education, with limited attention given to religious perspectives particularly those rooted in Islam. In fact, the Islamic tradition provides a strong epistemological foundation for information literacy through the Qur’an and Hadith.

The findings reveal that the concept of Iqra’ in Surah Al-‘Alaq extends beyond the act of textual reading, it encompasses critical, reflective, and spiritual dimensions of thinking that foster holistic and person centered knowledge development. Meanwhile, the principle of Tabayyun in Surah Al-Hujurat underscores the necessity of verification and clarity of information prior to dissemination, representing an expression of moral responsibility and social awareness. Collectively, these concepts illustrate that information literacy in Islam integrates intellectual, spiritual, and ethical dimensions.

The relevance of these principles in the digital age is particularly significant, given the proliferation of rapid, unverified information that often leads to misinformation. Thus, an information literacy framework grounded in the values of Iqra’ and Tabayyun offers an alternative conceptual model that not only emphasizes technical competencies in accessing and managing information but also embeds Islamic ethical values such as honesty, prudence, and social accountability in media engagement. This study is expected to contribute to the discourse on integrative information literacy by bridging scientific inquiry and religious consciousness in responding to the challenges of the digital era.
