Abstract
Septian Khoirunissa. An Analysis Of Spontaneous Cross-Cultural Communication On Ometv in Enhancing Learners' English Speaking Skills. Thesis. Department of English Education. Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Advisor 1 Dr. Diyah Atiek Mustikawati, M.Hum., Advisor 2 Rohfin Andria Gestanti, S.Pd., M.Pd.
The reason for this study is to examine how spontaneous cross-cultural communication occurs on the OmeTV platform and how it contributes to improving learners' English speaking skills. The reason for this study is to: (1) To identify the communication model that occurs during spontaneous conversations on OmeTV. (2) To describe the factors that encourage success or become obstacles in spontaneous communication on the OmeTV platform. (3) To explain how spontaneous communication through OmeTV affects the development of learners’ English speaking skills.
This study employs qualitative methodology for content analysis focused on OmeTV, involving five Indonesian EFL learners. Data sources include recorded video conversations with foreign speakers and semi-structured interviews. The research tools comprised interview guidelines to analyze communicative behavior. Qualitative content analysis methods were applied, encompassing data reduction, categorization, interpretation, and thematic analysis to uncover patterns in strategic competence, affective factors, sociolinguistic awareness, and conversation strategies.
OmeTV helps learners speak English better spontaneously with people from different countries. Those who participate improve their ability to speak directly, have confidence, and speak fluently. Methods such as requesting repetition and using gestures help reduce barriers to communication. Repeated interaction can increase confidence, even though anxiety may initially hinder performance. OmeTV gives us the opportunity to interact with various cultures, and future research should look at more participants or different platforms. Teachers are advised to incorporate spontaneous digital communication into language learning.
