Abstract

ABSTRACT
The Relationship Between Knowledge of Patient Treatment Priorities (Triage) and Family Anxiety

At the Emergency Room of 'Aisyiyah General Hospital, Ponorogo
By: Wasis

The Emergency Department (ER) is a hospital service unit that serves as the first aid provider and the main point of entry for patients in emergency situations. The high number of patient visits to the ER requires nurses to quickly and accurately sort patients based on priority level, using a triage system. Diversity in social, economic, and educational backgrounds, as well as patient and family experiences, coupled with a lack of understanding of triage procedures, can lead to differing perceptions of ER services. This situation, when exacerbated by an overcrowded ER, has the potential to increase the anxiety levels of patients' families. This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge about patient care priorities (triage) and anxiety among patients' families in the ER at 'Aisyiyah Ponorogo General Hospital.
The study design used a correlational cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted from February 10 to March 10, 2025. The ER population was 3,854 patients, with a purposive sampling method for 362 patients. Data collection for the independent variable used a triage knowledge questionnaire, and the dependent variable used the HARS-A anxiety questionnaire. Spearman Rank statistical test with α = 0.05.
Based on the results of the statistical test using Spearman Rank Correlation Analysis, the ρ-value (0.000) < α (0.05) is rejected, and Ha is accepted. This means there is a relationship between knowledge of patient care priorities (triage) and family anxiety in the emergency room at 'Aisyiyah Ponorogo Hospital. The Spearman's rho correlation coefficient is 0.774, indicating a strong correlation.
With a good triage system, patient safety, service efficiency, and the effectiveness of emergency management can be significantly improved. The role of nurses in appropriate education about triage for patients and families is expected to reduce patient and family anxiety.
