Abstract
ABSTRACT
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MATERNAL AGE AND PREMATURE RUPTURE OF MEMBRANES AT Dr. HARJONO S PONOROGO HOSPITAL
By: Farida Diah Pangastuti
Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is an obstetric emergency that may endanger both mother and fetus. Maternal age is assumed to be a risk factor, where <20 years indicates immature reproductive organs, while >35 years may experience decreased tissue elasticity. This study aimed to determine the correlation between maternal age and the incidence of PROM.
This study used a descriptive correlational design with a retrospective approach. The population consisted of all deliveries at RSUD Dr. Harjono Ponorogo during January–December 2024, totaling 437 mothers. A sample of 54 respondents was selected using simple random sampling. Data were obtained from medical records and analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of 0.05.
Respondents in the risk-age group (<20 and >35 years) were 36 mothers (66.67%), while those in the non-risk group (20–35 years) were 18 mothers (33.33%). PROM occurred in 35 respondents (64.81%). The Chi-Square test showed a p-value = 0.541 (p>0.05) and OR=1.000 (95% CI: 0.372–2.690), indicating no correlation between maternal age and PROM.
Although maternal age is often cited as a risk factor for PROM, this study shows that maternal age is not associated with the incidence of PROM. This is likely influenced by other, more dominant risk factors, such as infection, anemia, parity, adherence to antenatal care, and maternal nutritional status during pregnancy. Therefore, it is necessary to consider other risk factors and improve preventive education for pregnant women.
