Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines that often
occurs in children, characterized by diarrhea, vomiting, and can cause fluid loss
that can lead to hypovolemia. This study aims to describe nursing care for
children at risk of hypovolemia. The case study was conducted on an 8-month-old
boy in the Dahlia Ward, Darmayu General Hospital, Ponorogo (May 3–5, 2026).
Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and
medical records.
The patient's assessment revealed vomiting, green, mucus-like stools,
decreased appetite, decreased fluid intake, weakness, and dry oral mucosa. The
physical examination revealed signs of active fluid loss that could lead to
hypovolemia. The primary diagnosis identified was a risk of hypovolemia.
Interventions included monitoring for signs and symptoms of hypovolemia,
monitoring hydration status, monitoring fluid intake and output, encouraging
increased oral fluid intake, educating the family about meeting fluid needs, and
collaborating on intravenous fluid administration.
Evaluation results showed a gradual improvement in the patient's
condition, characterized by moist oral mucosa, increased fluid intake, decreased
frequency of vomiting and diarrhea, and improved hydration status. Further
research is recommended to assess a larger sample size and compare the
effectiveness of various nursing interventions in preventing hypovolemia. The
results can be used as a reference for the prevention and management of
gastroenteritis in children.
