Abstract
ABSTRACT
APPLICATION OF SQUEEZING BALL THERAPY IN COMBINATION
WITH PASSIVE RANGE OF MOTION (ROM) FOR NURSING PROBLEMS
OF PHYSICAL MOBILITY IMPAIRMENT IN NON-HEMORAGIC STROKE
PATIENTS

Non-hemorrhagic stroke can cause impaired physical mobility due to
hemiparesis, characterized by decreased muscle strength and limited range of
motion. Squeezing Ball Therapy in combination with Passive Range of Motion
(ROM) is a non-pharmacological intervention that can stimulate motor and
sensory functions to improve muscle strength and mobility. This case study aims
to determine the application of this intervention in non-hemorrhagic stroke
patients with nursing problems of physical mobility impairment at Dr. Harjono
Ponorogo Regional Hospital.
A descriptive case study was conducted on Mr. D, 70 years old, from July
27 to August 5, 2026. The intervention was administered twice daily, three days
per week for two weeks. It included Squeezing Ball Therapy and ROM exercises,
progressing from passive in the first week to active-assistive in the second week,
with nurse assistance. Muscle strength in the left upper extremity increased from
a scale of 2 to 4 and in the left lower extremity from a scale of 1 to 3,
accompanied by increased range of motion, decreased stiffness, and improved
coordination. Physical mobility issues resolved.
The more significant increase in upper extremity muscle strength was
related to the resistive nature of the squeezing ball, which directly loads the hand
muscles, the extensive cortical representation of the hand in the primary motor
cortex, and the weight-bearing function of the lower extremity, which involves
balance coordination and proprioception, requiring a longer adaptation period.
The combination of Squeezing Ball Therapy and Passive ROM effectively
improves muscle strength and mobility in non-hemorrhagic stroke patients and is
therefore recommended as a complementary therapy both in the hospital and at
home.
