Abstract
The Application of Moringa Leaf Decoction to Increase Breast Milk Production in Postpartum Mothers on Day 2 with Ineffective Breastfeeding
at Muhammadiyah General Hospital (RSU) Ponorogo
By: Yuli Faiqoturrohmah
Ineffective breastfeeding is a lactation challenge resulting from suboptimal breast milk production. Administering a decoction of Moringa oleifera leaves which contain galactagogue substances is an intervention option to stimulate breast milk secretion. This case study aimed to examine the effect of administering moringa leaf decoction on increasing breast milk production in a postpartum mother experiencing ineffective breastfeeding.
The study employed a nursing care process approach, involving an intervention of 250 ml of moringa leaf decoction once daily, accompanied by education on proper breastfeeding techniques. The subject was Mrs. D, a patient in the postpartum ward of RSUM Ponorogo, observed from August 25 to September 1, 2026.
Initial assessment revealed that only 1–2 drops of colostrum were expressed, breasts felt flaccid upon palpation, and the infant was fussy. Following the 7-day intervention, milk output began to increase on the fourth day, evidenced by breast firmness and fullness. By the eighth day, the milk flow was strong (spurting and leaking), pumped volume exceeded 30 ml, the infant’s urination frequency surpassed eight times daily, and the infant's sucking strength had improved.
Evaluation results confirmed an increase in breast milk production. The study concludes that administering moringa leaf decoction is effective in boosting breast milk production. These findings offer insight for nurses particularly regarding the management of postpartum mothers with ineffective breastfeeding issuesby highlighting the benefits of consuming moringa leaves for seven consecutive days to enhance milk production.
