Abstract

Key Words: Speaking, Describing Picture
Speaking is one of the four major language skills. It is productive
when the speaker produces language orally conveying his idea to
others. Speaking is one of the most difficult aspect for students to
master. This is hardly surprising when one considers everything that is
involved when speaking : ideas, what to say, language, how to use
grammar and vocabulary, pronounciation as well as listening to and
reacting to the person who are communicating with. In teaching
speaking the teacher can use suitable technique to improve students
competence in speaking. The technique is Describing Picture.
Describing Picture is using descriptive language and vocabulary as
determined by the teacher’s choice of pictures. This technique will give
more opportunities to develop students speaking skill by Describing
some picture. The purpose of this research is to improve students
speaking skill by Describing Picture at seventh grade of MTS Ma’arif
NU Tanjungsari Jenangan Ponorogo in academic year 2018/2019,
seventh class which consisted of 12 students.
The researcher used Classroom Action Research methodology. It
was good strategy to solve problem in the classroom. It has actions
directly to the students. Calsssroom Action Research is usually
conducted by the teacher who knows the condition of class and the
students ability in class. It is approach to improve their speaking skill in
English learning process. In this research, the researcher was started on
November 23, 2018 until Desember 1, 2018. This research was
conducted in two cycles. The researcher used three research
instruments, they are observation checklist, questionnaire, and test.
Based on the result of this research, the implementation of
Describing Picture could improve students speaking skill at the seventh
grade students of MTS Ma’arif NU Tanjungsari Jenangan Ponorogo, it
was seen from the improvement of average of students score from
16.66% in cycle I up to 100% in cycle II. The questionnaire result
showed that all of the students 100% enjoyed learn using Dscribing
Picture. In the observation checklist, first observed result showed that
83.3% and second observed result showed that 91.6% become active
during teaching and learning process using Describing Picture method.
